For over 70 years, The Arc San Francisco has been a leader in advocating for and empowering adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Serving San Francisco, Marin, and San Mateo counties, we work alongside our participants to break barriers to inclusion, ensuring equity, access, and opportunity for all.
Our Story: How We Began
In 1951, a group of determined parents came together to fight for their children’s right to education, employment, and inclusion. At a time when opportunities for people with developmental disabilities were almost nonexistent, they envisioned a future where everyone could live, learn, and work with dignity.
From this grassroots movement, The Arc San Francisco was born—growing into a trusted leader in advocacy, inclusion, and support.
Decades of Innovation & Impact
Over the years, we’ve pioneered programs and services that have transformed lives:
1960s – Helped participants find their first paid jobs through early workforce development programs.
1980s – Expanded services to include residential support, senior care, and multicultural employment programs.
1999-2000 – Created San Francisco’s first affordable housing for people with developmental disabilities, ensuring safe, inclusive living opportunities.

Our full name is The Arc San Francisco, and the 'arc' represents the journey of self-determination. With the right support and opportunities, people with developmental disabilities can reach their highest potential, achieve their personal goals, and define lifelong success on their own terms.
