Melvin loves having his own place where he can make a snack and watch the game -- especially if the Raiders are playing.
Residential Services
With the right supports, people with disabilities can fulfill the dream of living independently. Our goal is to provide a variety of living options to our clients as well as the skills that enable them to manage everyday tasks and be comfortable and safe in their own homes. More severe disabilities do not rule out independent living for a client. The Arc can provide daily hands-on living assistance, and some people may even qualify for In-Home Support Services to augment whatever support The Arc provides.
Independent Living Services
With ILS, skills instruction is provided for clients who need some support and ongoing training for successful independent living. Our instructors work one-to-one with clients living in the community, helping these individuals learn to:
- Budget and shop for groceries
- Refill prescriptions and monitor medications
- Prepare healthy meals
- Join a gym or exercise class
- Manage home cleaning and laundry
- Purchase shoes and clothing
- Pay rent and bills
- Plan social opportunities, trips and vacations
- Make and keep doctor appointments
- Resolve roommate or tenant issues
Supported Living Services
SLS offers skills instruction for clients who can have a better quality of life with a more intensive level of care and support, including up to 24 hours a day.
Healthcare Support
Many people with disabilities have difficulty comprehending the need for health improvement or cannot access proper treatment on their own. The Arc’s instructors help clients get appropriate medical, dental and vision assessments, and address individual health needs on a regular basis. Instructors help facilitate better communication with healthcare providers and work to ensure clients understand and participate in maintaining health and medication regimens and staying active and healthy.
Housing Advocacy
The Arc’s Housing Advocates help clients find affordable housing that meets individual needs, preferences and financial realities. Through individualized assessments, The Arc works to find the right match for every prospective tenant, whether it’s a senior seeking her own studio or a young adult looking for roommates to share a flat. The Arc’s Housing Advocacy team helps clients navigate the difficult process of finding and qualifying for housing, including Section 8 requirements.
